IGM was founded in 1968 by Dr. David L. Bovard and Dr. Henry Campbell, who saw a great need to help missionaries fulfill the calling and vision that God had given them. They were also deeply moved with a vision for national pastors around the world and the work they were doing. With the help of a Board of Directors, they organized Independent Gospel Missions, and the results are seen around the world. In February, 2000, Rev. Gary E. Newhart became the Director, continuing the vision of caring for missionaries, national pastors, and orphans.
